New South Wales, Australia
NICHOLAS DAUNT (b. 1937, England) moved to Australia in 1960 and worked as a graphic designer. He holds a Bachelor of Art (Visual Arts) and a Postgraduate Diploma in painting from the City Institute of Art in Sydney.
Daunt is a talented proponent of the deeply influential New York School of painters from the 1940’s and 50’s about which the artist says "I like the execution of free style and above all their philosophy, which is based on freedom of expression".
Reviewing Daunt’s 1992 show at Holdsworth Galleries in Sydney, Elwyn Lynn wrote in The Australian, "Nolde would have condoned Daunt’s jarring of wide, tranquil skies with sudden explosions of colour. Sometimes a long banner of drifting cloud or a celestial rift will stress the rhythmical continuity".
Daunt divides his time between Australia and South Carolina, USA where he had 3 exhibitions in the 1990’s. His work is well represented in prestigious corporate collections in Australia and private collections both here and overseas.
